The tale of Apu’s life is continued in the two subsequent installments of Ray’s Apu trilogy: Aparajito (The Unvanquished, 1956) andApur Sansar (The World of Apu, 1959). Pather Panchali is described as a turning point in Indian cinema, as it was among the films that pioneered the Parallel Cinema movement, which espoused authenticity and social realism. The first film from independent India to attract major international critical attention, it won India’s National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 1955, the Best Human Document award at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival, and several other awards, establishing Ray as one of the country’s most distinguished filmmakers. It is often featured in several lists of great films.
Sometime in the early years of the century, a boy, Apu, is born to a poor Brahmin family in a village in Bengal. The father, a poet and priest, cannot earn enough to keep his family going. Apu’s sister, Durga, is forever stealing guavas from the neighbour’s orchards. All these add to the daily struggles of the mother’s life, notwithstanding her constant bickering with old aunt who lives with the family.

In den Fünfziger Jahren schuf der indische Filmregisseur Satyajit Ray mit seiner “Apu Trilogie” eines der wichtigsten Werke der Internationalen Filmgeschichte. Die drei Fime ‚Pather Panchali’, ‚Aparajito’ und ‚Apur Sansar’ verfolgen in einer zugleich kraftvollen wie auch poetischen Bildsprache das Erwachsenwerden des Jungen Apu: von seiner Kindheit in einem verarmten bengalischen Dorf, durch Ausbildung und Studium in Benares, ins Erwachsenenleben nach Kalkutta in eine arrangierte Heirat. Die Filme, verwoben mit der Musik Ravi Shankars, sind erfüllt von tiefer Menschlichkeit und durchdrungen vom Rhythmus des Lebens.
Von den Zuschauern geliebt, und von den Kritikern geschätzt, haben die drei Filme viele internationale Auszeichnungen gewonnen, u. a. drei indische National Film Awards und sieben Awards in Cannes, Berlin und Venedig.
Zum Abschluss der Vorführung der drei Filme der Apu-Trilogie begrüßen wir am Donnerstag, 5.2.2015 um 18:30h den Direktor der indischen Film-Akademie Ashok Rane zu einem Filmgespräch und der Vorführung seines Dokumentafilmes “Being With Apu”.
